POP !!!

13th June 2007 marks the day i graduated from BMTC. Yes, its POP - Passing Out Parade. Here i am to bring some pictures taken by my parents on this significant event in my life...

My company (Bronco) marching in.

My company at attention ready for the parade.

Under the hot morning sun stood us

Starting of march-pass

Marching pass after the parade

The grand finale of the parade, at which most of us were looking forward to - throwing of jocky cap into the air.
And this marks the end of my 13 weeks stay in tekong. All the sweat, tears and blood were worth it, just for this day, witnessed by our parents. We are no longer recruits, we are not PRIVATES !!! And from here, we shall move on to another phase of our NS life in unit.

First Post After Enlistment

I've been enlisted to NS for almost 3 months and I am about to POP soon. Yet i failed to keep this blog updated. Reason being i am too lazy to take photos. So since this is the long weekend, i shall keep you guys updated on my life:

Firstly, 3 months ago, i came into an island call Pulau Tekong as a Chao Recruit a.k.a. lowest life-form. One of my most dreaded thing is that i became another member of the botak (no hair) community. Being a vain idiot, i have to find something to hide my botak-ness. I mean, i am so used to having "long" hair such that i can style them whatever i want and then i dont hav anything up there anymore, hence this becomes one of my favourite company when i go out during the weekends...

Back in camp, i got lotsa military stuff to handle. One of which is my number 4 uniform which i always bring home to wash during the weekends. As my OC says, this uniform not only represents the country, not only represents you (myself), but also my family, my father, my ancestors for it has my surname on it...

Secondly, another major thing that concerns my future - university application. I applied for NUS and NTU. Both having chemical engineering as the first choice and science as the 2nd for NUS while chemistry & biological chemistry for NTU. The NTU letter came very early, it came in late april, 2 days before the joint acceptance programme started. I got into my first choice for NTU. However, what kept me worried for the next 1 month of may is the fact that my NUS letter didn arrive. I waited for weeks until it came just last sunday, just when I thought it is never going to come...

Thats a sigh of relief for me. Alas, I was not offered my first choice for NUS and there comes my dilemma of accepting which offer. Comparing between the 2 offers, NTU gave me my first choice and that course promise me a good professional job with good pay in the future. However, NTU's chem eng only has a short history of 2 yrs and may not be as established as NUS'. As for NUS' science, it is rather established with a history of 75 years. Apart from that i have a special interest in chemistry which i can pursue in NUS Science. However, NUS Science is not as prestigious as chemical engineering and the degree is rather general, not promising me any professional jobs in the future. In the end i choose...

NUS Science

Do not ask me why, i am just more inclined to enter NUS perhaps. Maybe it is due to the "NUS brand" i am going for. Haha.

Finally, a bonus to me during the past 3 months is that I got invited back to AJC college day on the 19th May 2007 for my "decent" A lvl results. As most of you can guess it, its because i got 4 A lvl distinctions. Not really something very worth to be proud about (due to the fact that there are far much more brighter candidates out there from RJ, HC, etc). I do not really want to go back initially when i received the letter of invitation but my parents sort of "forced" me to go. So i finally did and there goes my "few seconds of fame, pride and glory" as i ascend the stage infront of so many audience to receive this trophy (together with many other peers with similar or much better achievements than me) from one of the VIPs who happens to be one of the school advisory committe.

Apart from the trophy i also got a certificate collected before the actual ceremony in the LT and also $60 worth of Times bookshop voucher. I wonder why they give Times voucher because the bookshop seemed so rare now in Singapore.

As for now, the spirit in my company is high because we will be POPing in less than 2 weeks time. After clearing all the major events in BMT such as field camp and range, we are now left with 24km route march which will take place this tuesday. As for when my next entry in this blog will arrive, i do not know. Perhaps next week, perhaps next year, perhaps never. Haha.

NTU Open House

Juz came back from NTU Open House. Well, the 3 universities in singapore are having open house this weekend but NTU has it for one day only, that is today lah. So i decided to visit NTU Open house first then NUS'. Not interested in visiting SMU Open house because i hav totally no interest in business related courses. Science excites me more. Economics (which is somewhere nearest to business courses out of the 4 subjects i took) is enough to bore me to death.

Anyway, i met Julia and MK at AMK Hub this morning 9.30am. The meeting time is supposed to be at 9.30am but for MK who is always late, we told her its at 9.00am and this works because she turns out to reach earlier than us, for the first time i think. But then i can see the fire in her eyes when i revealed our plans to tell her an earlier meeting time. Haha. No hard feelings !!! FPE couldnt come coz he was stuck in tekong until in the afternoon and YY got fever. He wasnt interested in NTU anyway. And yah, he dun really need to attend the open houses...he is already confirmed a seat in some US or UK top universities under some prestigious scholarship for he got 8 distinctions lor.

Anyway, we boared the North East train to Jurong where on board Julia met her sec sch classmates while i saw one guy from AJ 2105 sitting opposite. The train ride was a long tedious one as we finally got to stand up and walk across the platform at Jurong East interchange. The hour long north east ride made my ass numb. Anyway, we then changed to the east west line and took all the way to Boon Lay MRT where there was free feedle service arranged by NTU to fetch us students there. Well, the queue was rather long and it was under the hot scrotching sun and we hav to like wait for 3 buses to pass before we can be on board. The NTU ambassadors were kind enough to guide us on board. The bus drove very slowly to NTU where on the way, the NTU Student union tour guide attempted to excite us a little and spur us up but yah, she failed miserably.

Upon arriving at NTU, we were each given a red bag with lotsa goodies in it (as shown in the photo below)

Well, that bag alone is heavy enough and we were like carrying it around to view the booths and stuff with additional materials added in as we strolled along and the NTU people give us more phamplets and stuff. By the end of the open house our red bag was twice as heavy.

Anyway, lets talk bout the booths first. We actually went around asking about the "cut off points" for the courses we are interested in. Well, most of the courses' unofficial cut-offs were like ABB or Bs and Cs but one guy from school of mathematical and physical science were like telling us their minimum cut offs through the cohorts were like AAB or AAA and stuff which the 3 of us were very skeptical about. Basically we just went around the booths asking the same question - cut off points. Well, its not that we were being direct or something but we were just being more realistic i think. Why get to know more about a course that we cannot even enter. Btw i think we were sorta like a little aware of what each course got to offer and our main concern really is whether we are eligible (via competition wif e whole cohort) to enter our desired course.

Anyway, we were like walking around inside and outside packed with people and stuff for quite some time when MK had to leave at 1pm. So me and julia bid goodbye to her while we went for the campus tour. We got onto the arranged minibuses and the bus send us around the school where we can chose to remain on board or alight. There were students ambassadors in the bus as well to give us a brief intro of the surrounding. The first stop was some library i think no one on the bus actually wanted to alight. Well, thats being very normal for why would we wanna go view the library which is so boring. Haha. At the second stop we were brought to Hall 16 where we can alight and visit the halls to experience hostle life. This i can say, everyone on the bus alighted. Hahaha. Coz we were more interested in hostles than library...like duh. Haha. And then we were splitted into 2 grps one to visit the the aircon hall one to visit the non aircon one. And when the student guide for the aircon hall (hall 16) say "who want to go see aircon hall visit me", everyone followed her leaving the non aircon hall one nobody. Thats like...so unanimous.

Anyway, the hall visit was fun as the Hall 16 JCRC came to walk us around their hostle. We get to see the pantry, single room, double room, toilets, showers, TV room, study room, etc...all the facilities in the hall. This is rather fun and eye-opening. We sorta walked alot and when our hall visit ended, we were like all tired waiting at ths busstop for the campus tour bus to come. It took that bus a long time to come and hence we hav to wait a very long time. Adding to it was that me and julia hasnt have lunch, were we like feeling hungry, hot and tired. Anyway the bus came where some familiar faces alighted...2305's people. We boarded the bus back where we past by many old old halls. This started to raise queries in our mind on the purpose of NTU to only plan visit to the newest hall - hall 16 rather than the rest. Haha.

Anyway, when we arrived back at the school of biological sci, we made our way through the walls of people only to reach the foyer to board a free feedle bus back to boon lay station. The queues there were long and unorganised. The two of us have to switch queues like 3 times, only to board a bus (finally) after like half an hour of queueing. That place starts to get chaos as more people arrived u see. Well, its the dragon batch, alot of pple yeah? Anyway, we went to have lunch at Jurong Point where I saw someone with the NUS open house bag. It is like almost the same lar, except for the logo and the colour. If not everything is the same that i suspect the 2 unis ordered their bags from the same manufacturer. To cut cost maybe? EOS bah. Haha. After lunch, we made our way back to the boon lay MRT under the hot scrotching weather and took a long train ride back to AMK.

Anyway, lets see whats in the open house bag that makes it so heavy...

Hmmm...lotsa phamplets and reading materials... they even give us a very thich copy of nu you magazine!!!

And yes, they provide mineral water with the NTU label !!! Haha. No wonder the bag is so heavy. Carrying it for hours walking around the huge campus under the hot scrotching sun is hell lotsa torture. Lol.

Anyway, i will be visiting NUS open house tml hopefully. My choice of course for both unis is sorta confirmed. Both courses in both unis dont need any interview and hopefully i get into NUS first choice bah. I was still telling Julia juz now about my dilema if they were to offer me NUS 2nd choice and NTU first choice. Haha. Then really i dunno how to chose... ...

Pre - NS Occurance

In 2 weeks time i will be embarking on my journey to a new way of life - the military life. Yes, i will be enlisting in 16th Mar so those of you who want to send me my last journey (haha...choy !!! Touchwood) juz be present at Pasir Ris Bus Interchange 8am. Hahahaha. Well, i am not really excited about enlistment, neither am i anxious, worried or scared. I shall leave the fear and worry for this friday when my A lvl results are released bah. Anyway, starting a few days ago i've been shopping for some items that i may want to bring to camp tekong. Though i've not bought all the essential items recorded in the "unofficial guide" to newbies passed down verbally by seniors, relatives and peers currently serving the nation, i think it wont take long for me to finish my shopping list, hopefully by this weekend (that is, if i am not overly depressed over my A lvl results)...

Anyway, above are the items i've purchased. Lets see...
1. Hangers: for hanging uniforms of coz
2. Shower Lotion: for bathing of coz
3. Soap: Can be used to wash anything from body to clothes to even the floor.
4. Plastic Basket: To put small items like polish, handphones, etc so that they will not end up everywhere inside the cupboard.
5. Toothbrush: to brush teeth lah
6. Plaster: i dunno why i wanna bring that but my father insists so...
7. FM Receiver a.k.a radio: Of coz i hav to bring that, i cant live a day without listening to radio, and of coz my fave station radio 1003. Hahaha.
8. Fragrance Packet: To be hung inside e cupboard to prevent the worst smell that kills every insect within 10m radius.

Anyway, i think this is a norm, and that is my parents were more worried than i am. It is as if they were the ones serving the nation. I mean, come on, give me a break, you no need to be that worried. Well, i understand why they were so worried but if you compare their level of worry with mine, it is like 100 000 : 1? Everytime they have a chance to talk about NS, they will start nagging and nagging about this and that like how i should act, about how harsh the situation is and how i should endure, blah blah blah. My father still thinks the current NS system is similar to the time when he serve his NS donkey years ago where human rights is a question mark to the sirs and recruits back then.

And for their constant concerning naggings, i can tabulate a list of the top 20 most common statements they made with regards to the number of times each statement was said. And i must emphasize, the statements were repeated word by word! Exactly word by word. I think i can even memorize them. Can you imagine how fustrated i got everytime the topic of NS was brought about? Hence, i've constructed a chart of the top 10 things they've always not fail to repeat:

1. You dont worry too much lah (looks whos the one that is worrying). I last time skinnier than you only dunno how many pounds also go in then come out safely like that. See your that friend that friend (he is making comparison b/w me and someone else) also skinny skinny go in then also no complain...blah blah blah...you must be mentally prepared (looks whos the one that should be mentally prepared)...blah blah blah...no matter how tough it is you also must carry on (contradicts with statement no. 8) blah blah blah and if you really meet any trouble...you must tell me, i got a friend who works as a regular blah blah blah (spare me the trouble and embarrassment please)... (5024 times)

2. You dont have time to wash clothes one. So everytime when you bathe/shower, shun bian wash your clothes there...blah blah blah...wash clothes finish le then bathe...do everything in the one cubicle...blah blah blah...then can save time... (i assure you if i do that, the long queue behind me waiting for shower will kill me instantly one k.o) (4021 times)

3. Remember to drink alot of water...blah blah blah...coz weather will b very hot...blah blah blah (3677 times)

4. You cannot be scared of insects one. There alot of insects like beetles, cockroaches, centipedes, etc (wadeva hell insects) then you cannot take gun shoot them bcoz you are afraid of them blah blah blah ...(like i will make a fool out of myself liddat) ... (3591 times)

5. If got any items you lack or use finish alreadi can buy from the canteen one...blah blah blah...the canteen will be open until dunno wad hell time and at that time i always hungry then sneak down for supper blah blah blah...(3046 times)

6. Last time we must polish our boots until clean clean shiny shiny one...blah blah blah...then to prepare for our POP we will light the candle to polish our shoe wif a spoon blah blah blah...then seargent see not shiny enough throw it down from 3 storeys (2877 times)

7. No need to bathe in the morning. You dont have the luxury to. (Like i will in tekong)...you need to be quick. If the next morning the you need to wear wad outfit you just wear it to sleep the night b4...blah blah blah (2314 times)

8. If you cannot take it anymore (during running / training) you must stop and tell your officer. They wont force you to continue one. Last time during SOC those very obese one cannot climb over the wall blah blah blah then the sir finally just ask them to walk by blah blah blah. (2003 times)

9. Remember to powder your feet and else where blah blah blah coz you will get dirty and sticky after training and blah blah blah...you only get to bath once...(1953 times)

10. The food there was horrible. I actually got to eat a piece of pork with a thick layer of skin blah blah blah...and the bread is made from changi prison...blah blah blah...so hard that it can rebounce when hit against the wall. (1874 times)

(All statements are written in first person p.o.v, i.e. my father's. Everything in brackets and italics are my p.o.v.)

Anyway, one other thing is that my parents like to make comparison with me and one of my childhood friend (he was enlisted in jan) whom i've not spoken to for decades...i mean years. Yah...and then they will start to hear news and details from anyone they can get from and start re-iterating it to me. Like for example, "eh...that who who who hor say this this this leh...". And also, they will deliberately go ask my that childhood friends' parents for details...like my father telling my mother "hey, rmb to call xxx's mother and ask her bout this this this...", then hours later 'hey, also can you call xxx's father to ask him bout that that that...". Waseh...such pre-NS occurance. Haha. I dont know whether to laugh or cry. Thats why i've told my sister "thankgoodness you no need to serve NS". The meaning is not that she does not need to go through the pain of NS but the pain of parents nagging to you. Haha. But then i must emphasize that my parents dotes on me alot and they are extremely worried that their only son is gonna serve the nation. Alright, i shall be a good boy (i mean MAN) and look after myself. Dont worry bout me too much yeah!

CNY Cookies Part 2

Yay !!! I'm back for more cookies baking. This one that i've made is some butter cookie. Well, i wont describe much the entire procedure coz its more or less the same. Here are some pictures taken during the process.

Cookies shaped and chocolate chips placed at the top, all waiting to be sent into the oven.

This is the dough or mixture at which the cookies were made. Haha. This much mixture can make a total of 70+ cookies.
Cookies placed inside the oven baking. Can ya smell the aroma of the butter cookies? Hahaha.

So yeah, all you guys out there hungry already? Haha. Come visit me ba, then maybe you can try the cookies i've made for cny. Hehe. (Provided they are not eaten up before you arrived)
